Checking In........

Hi everyone!! Long time, no see!! I hope everyone is doing great and enjoying their warm Illinois summer. The above pictures give you an idea of what I've been doing. The garden is producing wonderfully this year! Saving the harvest has basically been the sum of my preps lately. The day the above picture was taken, I had picked 22 cukes!!
Besides preserving my garden's harvest, I've only done a small amount of work towards the inventory of my food preps, which was my summer goal. I purchased some more wheat berries and got them stored, and I finally stored the bags of white rice that I had purchased. (The way I store my grains is to lightly coat them with Diatomaceous Earth to prevent any bug infestation.) Beyond that, not much has gotten done. I'm still waiting on a new food shelf. The plan we originally had didn't work out, so we're stuck figuring out what WILL work. (Things don't always work out like planned and you have to go with the flow!)
Our economy is still on shaky ground; I'm not sure it's possible that it will ever be on solid ground again. Even if things are not negatively affecting you and your area of the country right now, it's doesn't mean that it won't at some time in the future. NOW is always the best time to prep, to practice with your preps, to learn new skills. I'm helping a few newbies with their gardens and canning this year. Teaching someone a skill that can be used to enhance their life and their preps is a very satisfying thing.
I'll try to check in more often. Until then, if you need me, I'm in my kitchen standing over the canner!
Prep On!

Hi Gen-A big Hurray on the garden. Your produce looks good. We have been getting little bits here and there and its starting to add up. :)
Question-If I am storing long term foods in mylar bags and O2 absorbers, do I need D-earth?

Hope your enjoying your summer. We are finally getting more tolerable weather. So we are starting to get more done.

Hi Shelly!! I hope you're doing well, also!! Glad your produce is starting to come in! With the mylar bags, is that where you suck the air out? I'm not really sure abou the d-earth, to tell you the truth! The d-earth will naturally kill any bugs that happen to be on the grain. I don't know if the mylar bags help to stop that, too. Sorry! I really don't have an answer for that one--anyone else know?
