The catalogs are coming, the catalogs are coming!

*sorry about the sideways pic. not sure what happened!*

If your house is anything like ours is, then your mailbox has been filled with seed catalogs lately! Plus, we were in Menards tonight and they have their seed packets out for sale already! This is one of the most exciting times in the garden, even though you're not in the garden! Drooling over new plants, dreaming of the weed-free, pest-free garden you want to see! It's all so fun!

If you're going to have a garden for the first time this year, then now is the time to look through those catalogs and decide what you want to plant. Pull out the seeds you have stored in your freezer and see what you're in need of. Are you going to try a few new heirloom seeds this year? Is there a new tomato variety you'd like to try? How about an heirloom pumpkin? (I tried one last year and loved it!) Get your garden planned out on paper, and then buy those seeds! We've got a few months before we can start our seeds indoors in preparation for spring planting.

Prep on!

Gen - i am soo excited to start planning the garden too! i love getting all of the seed catalogues and looking through them and deciding which seeds to get where. i always get non-GMO, heirloom seeds.

as well - my hubby built a seed-starting shelf thingy for me this year - it has four shelves and each shelf has 2 fluorescent light bulbs above it - i am going to start all of my seeds on the shelf using the MMpaints baggy method (let me know if you want more info on this method) and then move all sprouted seedlings to the green house that hubby will build this spring. oh man - i am soooo excited. i think that you can tell eh?

you are doing such an awesome job here at the Illinois Preppers Network! keep up the great work Gen!

No wonder I'm itching to plant away and just do the garden bit lol. Sometimes I just don't know where to start. My edible garden needs reinforcements of more fruits and veges growing and I look so forward to my gardening.

Kymber, Thanks so much for the compliment! (Right back at ya!) I've started some of my seeds indoors the past few years, but I don't think I know of the baggy method. I'd like to hear more about it. (She's pretty good, isn't she?) Your new shelf sounds absolutely fabulous! Hubby is redoing a wall in my craft room, and he's going to put a shelf up that will hold my seeds. They're usually just on the countertop. You're getting a greenhouse, too!! Woo-Hoo! I hope you'll put pictures up for us to see!! Yay!

Aloha, can you plant all year down there or do you have a hot season that you take off? I'll bet you can grow some great foods that we wouldn't even think of growing!

Thanks ladies!
