Too Much Freedom? and Ron Paul's State of the Republic Address

Hi all! Hubby told me about a conversation he had with someone today, which left me completely dumbfounded!! He was speaking with an older gentleman in his 70's who was born in Germany during WWII, and moved to America when he was a young adult. This man told hubby that he believes we are TOO free in this country, and that it's a bad thing!!! (Is your jaw hanging open like mine was?!) What this man was saying, but probably didn't realize, was "Hubby, I don't think you should have as much freedom as you do. I think you should be living more slave-like". This information left me so unnerved. Is this what we're fighting against? Not only 'leaders' who don't want us to be free, but other citizens who will fight against freedom?

The more I thought about it I realized that, for some people, other people having freedoms could seem scary. I'll draw on an example from my own life. We homeschooled our children through their high school graduation. Our reasons for home schooling them were because we wanted them to have the best education, be protected from bad influences, and to be free from government dictating what and how they learned. These are all great reasons to home school. But, these reasons can be twisted and frequently are by some families. The outside world can be seen as so evil, that absolutely no unsupervised contact is allowed. "The children might go astray. The children might desire to do something they shouldn't do. We might lose them". Now, those are all valid reasons for doing something, but if fear is your motivator it will usually cause you to limit someone else's freedom, instead of equipping them to hopefully handle their freedoms responsibly. (Obviously, I believe that growing children are better protected from these evils.) Alcohol use is another example of something that people are free to use, but could be something that they abuse. BUT THEY STILL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO USE IT, even though some people's use can scare us. We all have the freedom to mess up. Unfortunately, we'll can pay greivous consequences for our bad choices in our freedom.

So, do we limit freedoms because some people will abuse them? Thomas Jefferson didn't think so. He said, "I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty, than those attending too small a degree of it." I think that's a great attitude to have. I want freedom, true freedom like God gives and our constitution protects. And that means that I want you to have those freedoms as well.

I did not watch the president's SOTU address last night. I absolutely cannot stomach that display of lies, coverups, and pompous back-patting. Instead I watched Congressman Ron Paul's State of the Republic address online. (I'm a HUGE fan!) For those of you who don't know who Ron Paul is here is a brief overview of his record He has never voted to raise taxes. He has never voted for an unbalanced budget. He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership. He has never voted to raise congressional pay. He has never taken a government-paid junket. He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch. He voted against the Patriot Act. He voted against regulating the Internet. He voted against the Iraq war. He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program. He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year. Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress. (Can you believe he lost the 2008 GOP nomination to McCain with a record like that?)

Here is a link to part 1 of his state of the republic address. Parts 2 and 3 can be linked to after viewing part 1. (I thought part 3 was the best one!) The 3 videos are just shy of 20 minutes.

Prep on for Freedom!

Thanks, Aloha! I wish he was the prez, too! I keep getting those anonymous comments. I'm going to have to change something to stop them? Any thoughts?

Intersesting! My sister knows someone that is from Lebanon, and believes the U.S. has too many freedoms also. Wondering if it's immigrants that came from suppressed societies feel that way or if natural born Americans feel that way too! Unfortunatley many people today want to be taken care of and will give up there freedoms to have that luxury.

Shelly, Very interesting. You would think that if folks came from less free countries, that they would cherish more freedom. Maybe they're SO used to what they knew, that they just can't embrace more freedom? I don't know. Very strange. Actually, hubby found out today that this man FINALLY watched America:Freedom to Fascism which he had been refusing to watch! Maybe he'll start to have his eyes opened a bit!

We homeschooled our kids. The only negative aspect of it was that when they applied to colleges, we had a lot of trouble because the admissions people couldn't deal with homeschooled individuals. They had no idea how to work around it. We ended up sending both our kids to Canada for higher education. The Canadians had no issues with home schooling at all.

I watched Obama's speech. It was about as you described.

Hey Hermit! Glad to hear you homeschooled your kids, too. You know, when our son went in the navy, they told him that he wouldn't have been considered for the job he signed up for (nuclear) becaue he was homeschooled, except that I'd made up such great professional looking transcripts! If I recall, though, he had to take an extra test that gov't school kids don't have to take!
