Lives, Fortunes, sacred Honor

Hi everyone! Today is a supreme day of celebration in the life of every American. Today, July 4th, is the day that, in 1776, the independence resolution was voted on and accepted. 56 men put their signature to a piece of paper that would change their lives, the lives of their countrymen, and the rest of the world. A new nation was born. A nation where a new concept, freedom, would be tried, encouraged, protected.

The Declaration of Independence ends with the paragraph, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance upon the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor". 56 men, choosing to sign a piece of paper that would make them enemies of the largest, most powerful country in the world, promised to each other that they would give their lives (they were ready to die), their fortunes (bank accounts, houses, possessions), and their honor (their reputation, their identity, their place in society).

Freedom was worth dying for. It was worth losing their 401k's and retirement accounts for. It was worth being thought of as less than what they were. I know that honor doesn't seem to be something that many Americans care about these days, but life and fortune is something we definitely care too much about. Some things, things like freedom, are worth giving up all we have to gain. Thank God today for the men and women who laid all that they had on the line for this great nation.

On July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail and said, "I am apt to believe that it (the signing of the Declaration) will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty". (Parentheses is my comment.) Why don't you pull out the Declaration today and read it to your family. It's not very long and will only take a few minutes.

May you celebrate today! May you rejoice on this most American of days! May you give thanks for this day of deliverance! Have a beautiful Independence Day!! (Prepping can wait until tomorrow!!)
